AN APPETITE FOR PERAK

Perak has a series of traditional food that unfortunately aren’t in the gastronomic map of Malaysia. Traditional Perak food is unique, full of flavour and absolutely delicious. Dishes like kerabu, ulam, rendang tok, sambal and tempoyak are the well known ones among the locals. This time I had the opportunity to sample some of Perak’s greatest traditional food.

I’ve listed below 3 of the top restaurants I’ve personally experienced on my recent road trip to Perak.

RESTORAN SELERA TERAPUNG PENGKALAN HULU

If you want to experience the true Perak traditional food, then head to Restoran Selera Terapung Pengkalan Hulu. This restaurant, located right by Tasik Takong, serves absolutely delicious Perak food. You’ll find dishes you’ll probably never find elsewhere! Kerabu pucuk putat, sambal picit and kerabu ikan keli are some of its specialities. I never knew what they were except ikan keli until I was there. And believe it or not, I struggled to stop eating!

TERINGAT LENGGONG

Located by the beautiful Tasik raban, this is a great spot for traditional Perak food in the town of Lenggong. Teringat Lenggong offers a selection of fried chicken, grilled fish, ulam (raw herbs and vegetables) vegetable kerabu (raw vegetables infused with shredded coconut and dried shrimp)and vegetable pecal (vegetables in peanut sauce) served in the 1970s round tray. If you’re new to traditional Malay food, you ought to put this on your list! You can even choose to dine the proper Malay style, right by the lake, on a traditional woven mat (tikar) while enjoying the stunning views.

Take note, a tray of food that could feed 4-5 people costs only RM30! Delicious food, great views and food priced at a bargain, you ought to put it on your list if you’re in the town of Lenggong.

WARUNG P RAMLEE @THE KANDU

Lovely open concept restaurant surrounded by nature, this restaurant located in the compound of The Kandu Resort ticked the boxes! This restaurant, named after the famous Malaysian artist in 1970s is situated in Gopen , Perak. They serve both Western and Asian food . BBQs are available too on some evenings.

I love the owner’s antique collection and photos of P.Ramlee on the wall right at the front of the restaurant. The owner clearly is a big fan of P. Ramlee!

LITTLE IPOH CAFE

An example of never judging a book by its cover! Little Ipoh Cafe food might not look so good in photos but the taste is definitely commendable. I had the asam laksa which was absolutely delicious, I had 2 bowls of it! No wonder they’ve opened their second outlet after the success of the one in Ipoh!
