JOHOR BEST KEPT SECRET

The Covid 19 pandemic is long gone and the excitement of enjoying the great outdoors are on the horizon for a lot of us. Whether it is camping under a million stars, trekking through the pristine rainforests, a long walk on a hidden beach, adventure travels are exhilarating to see some exotic places.

Johor offers an array of endless great adventures. I’m stoked to have recently discovered Tiger Base Camp, a hidden gem, an absolutely stunning campsite by the South China Sea. Located on a 150 acre piece of land, this campsite, lined with serried rows of Casuarina trees is filled with nature’s beautiful surprises. Spectacular sunrise, enchanting forest trails, plentiful wildlife, this is definitely the place to be if you fancy getting rough and tumble, wet and wild! I was blown away by the beauty of its surroundings.

It rained on the second day when I was there, but honestly, I find it hard to describe the beauty of the ocean right after the pouring rain. The colours of the skies and the ocean were so vivid giving it a very dramatic feel. The full rainbow over the horizon was magnificent. So, don’t worry even if it rained when you’re camping, as long as your tent doesn’t leak, there’s true beauty that nature speaks for itself in such weather.

I went for a hike on Tiger Base Camp’s nature trail to get an aerial view of the South China Sea. According to Lisa, the guide, porcupines and deers are regularly sighted along the trail. Elephants have been sighted there too a few months ago!

ATVs, bicycles, kayak and archery are available too. Just pick a spot to pitch your tent, there’s plenty of space to explore!

There are huts for rent and more than enough of trees for shade and to hang your hammock. Falling asleep in the day to the sound of the ocean in my hammock to me was a total bliss.

Above all, I must say in my decades of travels, it is my encounter with people, making moments that leave a special place in my heart. That is the greatest joy of my travels.

The staff have definitely made that difference. They’re very warm and welcoming and did their best to assist, making me feel at home even out of my comfort zone.

I was honoured to meet the owner of this campsite, Tuan Haji Edham. Credits to this humble man, he funded a group of 80 underprivileged children from Fitrah Qaseh to have a holiday, camping at Tiger Base Camp when I was there. Team building activities and projects to boost their confidence level were arranged to help these innocent souls. It was truly special for me, meeting this incredible group of children. These children, aged between 2 to 18 years old, have gone through a really tough life and longing to be loved. I somehow find them the happiest, despite the grief they had to go through in life. We laughed, sang, danced, chatted and took lots of selfies together! I’m blessed to have the opportunity to spend some time, share some love and happiness with the children.

Well, here some the details for TBC. I need to find a box of tissues to wipe my tears….
