Perlis Top Eateries You Shouldn’t Miss

There’s an old Malay saying, ‘kecil-kecil cili padi,’ which means that small things can be incredibly potent, like the tiny bird’s eye chillies that packs a fiery punch. This saying perfectly encapsulates Perlis, the smallest state in Malaysia which is rapidly emerging as a vibrant tourist destination and food haven.

Though small in size, Perlis offers an array of culinary delights that are big in flavour and cultural significance. From seafood to delicacies to traditional breakfast, the eateries in Perlis provide a taste of local culture to leave you craving for more.

Here are some of the must-visit eateries based on my personal culinary experience in Perlis.

Ali Kopi

For the perfect breakfast spot that gives you a taste of the local street food, Ali Kopi is the place to be. The drive to this cafe is beautiful, passing through local villages and picturesque rice fields, setting the stage for a great dining experience.

Ali Kopi offers a delightful variety of homemade Maly dishes; its roti jala with beef curry and pulut udang are so delicious it reminded me of my granny’s! The breakfast char kuay teow is a dish so savoury it rivals the famous Penang dish! The assortment of roti canai paired with their specialty coffee is the ideal way to start your days.

It is heartwarming to see locals from different races and all walks of life enjoying breakfast together at this low-key cafe, creating a sense of community that enhances the dining experience.

📍 No. 65, Kampung Kechor Behor Ampang, 01000 Kangar, Perlis, Malaysia.

⏰ Tuesday to Sunday 7am – 3pm. Close on Monday

Nipah Klasik

Imagine enjoying a hearty Malay breakfast surrounded by the unique beauty of mangrove palms (nipah in Malay language) and the serenity of rice fields. This gorgeous cafe provides a cosy setting surrounded by nature. The restaurant serves the classic Malay breakfast – Nasi Lemak, Mee Goreng and Lontong. Simplicity at its best!

📍BARAT, NO 5579, Kampung Bunga Emas, 02700 Simpang Ampat, Perlis, Malaysia

⏰ Open daily from 8am to 6.30pm

Nyiru Klasik

If you’re a seafood lover, Nyiru Klasik is a haven you can’t miss. From the moment you walk in, the aroma of grilled fish and sambal prawn tantalises your senses. Each dish, whether it is a simple stir fry vegetables, a soothing soup or succulent prawns is cooked to perfection. Their speciality, Belangkas (horseshoe crab), renowned for its roe, is a must-try. This is a really interesting dish served with mango salad. The impeccable service at Nyiru Klasik adds to the overall delightful dining experience.

Food was delicious that I ate them all that I totally forgot to take the photos! You’ve got to make your way there to experience the food for yourself 🙂

📍Changlun – Kuala Perlis Hwy, Pekan Kuala Perlis, 02000 Kuala Perlis, Perlis, Malaysia

⏰ Open daily from 2.30pm until 12am

Umar Seafood and Grill

Umar Seafood and Grill is another gem for seafood lovers. Their unique dish, ‘Mentarang,’ or duck mouth clam is a local delicacy you ought to try. The horseshoe crab is another must try. My ultimate favourite dish here was the deep fried squid. This is a dish that melts in your mouth, unusual as a lot of squid dishes served tend to be rubbery and chewy.

📍No.PT 5969, KAMPUNG BATU TANDIAP, SEBERANG RAMAI, 02000 Kuala Perlis, Perlis, Malaysia

⏰ Open daily from 5pm- 11pm

Sabut Ikan Bakar

Sabut Ikan Bakar is another option for eateries in Perlis that offers a wide variety of local Malaysian dishes. Located in an open air area by the waters, the restaurant offers a relaxed atmosphere. The crab sambal is particularly noteworthy, with its spicy and tangy flavour. The seafood tomyam soup was my favourite. I had 3 servings that night!

📍NO 2, PENGKALAN JETI TOK KUNING, JALAN, KAMPUNG KOTA KAYANG, 02000 Kuala Perlis, Perlis, Malaysia

⏰ Open daily from 5pm – 11.30pm

Perlis – Small State, Big Flavour

Perlis may be a small state, but its culinary experience is vast and varied. Just like the old Malay saying, “kecil-kecil cili padi.” Each eatery provides a great dining experience that captures the essence of Perlis food culture. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, these hidden gems promise to take buds on an unforgettable journey.

So the next time you find yourself in Perlis, make sure you explore these fantastic eateries and savour the authentic flavours they offer.
